Pharmacology
Bronchodilator and expectorant action attributed to vasicine, which has shown mast-cell stabilizing and bronchospasm-protective effects in animal models. Vasicinone is being studied as a precursor to bromhexine and ambroxol (modern mucolytics).
General dosage
Standardized leaf extract: 100-300 mg, 2-3 times daily. Traditional decoction: 5-10 g dry leaf daily.
Contraindications
Pregnancy (uterotonic activity), known hepatic disease at higher doses.
Interactions
May potentiate antiplatelet and anticoagulant drugs.
Safety notes
Generally well-tolerated in traditional doses. Avoid high-dose extracts long-term without monitoring.
