About Mongolian spots

Mongolian spots are flat, blue or blue-gray skin markings that commonly appear at birth or shortly after and are a form of a birth mark. They are congenital and are not abnormal or a sign of disease. They are more commonly seen in East Asians, Turks, East Africans, Polynesians, and Native Americans. They typically disappear in 3-5 years. They can sometimes look like bruises and children that present with them are sometimes mistakenly thought to have been victims of child abuse.

Symptoms

Blue or blue-gray spots on the back, buttocks, base of spine, shoulders, and other body areas, flat area with irregular shape and unclear edges, normal skin texture

A history and physical exam will be performed. No tests are needed. The doctor can diagnose this condition by looking at the skin.

Conventional treatment summary

No treatment is needed. They many times disappear after 3-5 years.
