Fiber (or roughage) is the part of fruits, vegetables and grains not broken down by the body that contributes to stool. A low fiber diet may be recommended after certain surgeries or with diverticular disease. Habitual low fiber diets can lead to constipation. Low fiber diets may also increase the risk of colon cancer.

Constipation, abdominal cramping.

Treatment depends on the reason a person chooses a low fiber diet. For constipation with no medical reason to maintain a low fiber diet, treatment includes increasing the `roughage` in the diet. Fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of fiber. Oral supplements can also be taken.
