About Alcoholism

A physical and mental dependence on alcohol, sometimes resulting in chronic disease and the loss of interpersonal, family and work relationships. Continued daily use can result in permanent damage to the liver (cirrhosis). Other long term effects include: anemia, internal bleeding, impaired thinking, confusion, coma, multiple cancers, and premature death.

Symptoms

Weakness, impaired thinking, poor decision making, depression, separation from family.

Tests & Diagnostics

A history and physical exam will be performed along with other tests which may include: a complete blood count, liver function tests, blood sugar, and electrolytes.

Common tests: Complete blood count (CBC), Comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP), Lipase.
