About Parotitis (salivary gland inflammation)

The parotid gland is a salivary gland beneath the ear. Infection in the parotid gland can be caused by mumps, a virus. Bacterial infections in this gland can result from a blocked salivary duct.

Symptoms

`Chipmunk-like` swelling of the face below one or both ears, swelling below the jaw, dry mouth, abnormal tastes, foul tastes, mouth or facial pain, fever.

A history and physical exam will be performed. No additional tests are needed unless the infection is extensive.

Conventional treatment summary

In some cases no treatment is necessary. Antibiotics may be prescribed. Drinking plenty of fluids and sucking on sugar-free lemon drops to increase the flow of saliva will hasten recovery. If a stone is found in the salivary duct it will be removed. Vaccination against mumps can prevent mumps virus infection.
