About Metastatic neoplasm (cancer spread)
A cancerous growth that arises in a place beyond the original site of the cancer. The original cancer is called the primary tumor and the sites of metastasis are named secondary tumors. The cancer cells of the metastatic tumors have exactly the same appearance as the primary tumor. Metastatic cancers cells can spread by traveling through the blood stream, by using the lymph channels, or by spreading within the abdominal cavity.Symptoms
Depends on the site of the metastasis.Tests & Diagnostics
A history and physical exam will be performed. Additional tests include: CT or MRI scan to identify the metastasis. A Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan can also be done and may be more accurate in detecting small metastases.Common tests: CT Scan, MRI.
Conventional treatment summary
Depends on the cell type of the metastasis and the location of the metastasis but may include: chemotherapy, radiation therapy and/or surgery.Medical specialties
