About Toe swelling

Toe swelling can result from inflammation, infection, allergic reaction or very rarely cancer. Inflammation can be caused by trauma, arthritis, gout, or an autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Symptoms

Pain, tenderness, swelling, redness.

Tests & Diagnostics

A history and physical exam will be performed. Depending on the history a toe x-ray and/or blood tests may be done.

Depends on the cause of the swelling but may include: immobilization, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications/NSAIDs (ibuprofen/Motrin or Advil, naproxen/Naprosyn or Aleve), pain medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) and/or antibiotics.
