Enlarged lymph nodes near the neck. The enlarged lymph nodes can result from infection, tumor or inflammation.

Symptoms

Lumps in neck, pain, redness, difficulty swallowing, difficulty breathing.

Tests & Diagnostics

A history and physical exam will be performed. Tests will be performed to identify an infection that may be causing the enlarged lymph nodes. A CT scan and/or MRI may be performed to further evaluate the lymph node enlargement and surrounding structures. Biopsy is considered for rapidly enlarging lymph nodes or persistently abnormal nodes.

Common tests: Complete blood count (CBC).

Conventional treatment summary

Depends on the cause of the lymph node enlargement but may include: antibiotics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications/NSAIDs (ibuprofen/Motrin or Advil, naproxen/Naprosyn), acetaminophen (Tylenol), or surgery. If due to cancer, surgery, radiation, and/or chemotherapy may be recommended.
