About Functional disorders (psychogenic illness)

Disorder characterized by physical symptoms with no known or detectable organic basis. It is a condition thought to be psychogenic in nature. Examples include certain cases of: chronic abdominal pain, low back pain, chronic fatigue, chronic chest pain, and chronic headaches.

Symptoms

Symptoms can be diverse depending on the body system affected.

Tests & Diagnostics

A history and physical exam will be performed. A psychiatric evaluation may be recommended. An extensive work-up may be recommended to rule out other causes for the symptoms.

Common tests: Complete blood count (CBC), Comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP).

Conventional treatment summary

Treatment depends on the symptoms but may include: psychological treatment, counseling, and at times chronic pain treatment with a chronic pain specialist.
