About Foreign body in the respiratory tract

A respiratory tract foreign body is usually accidentally inhaled (aspirated), is a common pediatric emergency, and may cause a serious lung infection. It needs to be removed by a specialist.

Symptoms

Cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, fever, sputum production.

Tests & Diagnostics

A history and physical exam will be performed. An X-ray or bronchoscopy may be recommended to locate the foreign body.

Common tests: CT Scan, X-ray.

Conventional treatment summary

Unless it is coughed up, a foreign body in the respiratory tract will require removal during a procedure called bronchoscopy.
