The patella tendon attaches the patella to the lower leg (tibia) and is essential for straightening the leg. A tendon is the fibrous tissue that attaches muscle to bone in the human body. Rupture can occur from a sudden forceful straightening of the leg, from a direct blow to the tendon, or from a penetrating injury such as a laceration.Symptoms
Knee pain, inability to straighten leg at the knee (extend), anterior knee tenderness, anterior knee swelling.Tests & Diagnostics
A history and physical exam will be performed. An X-ray may be done to rule out an associated fracture. An MRI or CT scan may be performed to delineate any other injuries.Common tests: CT Scan, MRI, X-ray.
