Gingivitis (inflammation of the gums)

About Gingivitis (inflammation of the gums)

The gingiva is the tissue covering the jaw bone and teeth. Food, plaque and bacteria become lodged between the teeth causing swelling and pain of this tissue causing inflammation of the gums. Gingivitis is the mildest form of periodontal disease. If the disease progresses it can involve more of the surrounding tissue becoming periodontitis. If left untreated this disorder can lead to loss of the teeth. Periodontal disease is the most common cause of tooth loss. Recent studies have demonstrated a correlation between periodontal disease and heart disease: patients with periodontal disease can have twice the risk for developing a heart attack or stroke as people without periodontal disease.
