Swelling of the abdomen is usually from a build-up of fluid (ascites) or from distention of the intestines.

Symptoms

Abdominal distention, abdominal pain.

Tests & Diagnostics

A history and physical exam will be performed. Lab tests will be done to rule out low albumin, or advanced liver disease. Additional tests include: X-ray or CT scan to diagnose an intestinal obstruction or the cause of abnormal fluid collection (ascites).

Common tests: Complete blood count (CBC), Comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP), CT Scan, Urinalysis (UA), Ultrasound, X-ray.

Conventional treatment summary

Depends on the cause of the swelling but may include: drainage of fluid (paracentesis), decompression of the stomach (NG tube), enemas, diuretics, and/or surgery.
