About Behçet (mouth, eye, and genital ulcers)
Inflammation of the blood vessels (vasculitis). It causes ulcers and sores in the mouth, genitalia, skin, and eyes. Patients can also suffer from stiffness and swelling in the joints (arthritis). The eye involvement is called uveitis. The inflamed blood vessels are thought to be caused by an overactive immune system, but what triggers this abnormal response is not known. The disease is more common in the Middle East, Japan, and Asia. It is most commonly found in the 20-30 year old group. Some patients can have blood clots, usually involving the legs.Symptoms
Sores or ulcers of the mouth, genitalia, and skin. Eye pain, eye redness, eye swelling, joint pain, joint swelling, swollen legs.Tests & Diagnostics
A history and physical exam will be performed. Other autoimmune diseases need to be ruled out.Common tests: Complete blood count (CBC), Comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP), CT Scan, Urinalysis (UA).
