The parotid gland is a salivary gland beneath the ear. Infection in the parotid gland can be caused by mumps, a virus. Bacterial infections in this gland can result from a blocked salivary duct.Symptoms
`Chipmunk-like` swelling of the face below one or both ears, swelling below the jaw, dry mouth, abnormal tastes, foul tastes, mouth or facial pain, fever.Tests & Diagnostics

In some cases no treatment is necessary. Antibiotics may be prescribed. Drinking plenty of fluids and sucking on sugar-free lemon drops to increase the flow of saliva will hasten recovery.
