Patellar (knee cap) tendon rupture

About Patellar (knee cap) tendon rupture

The patella tendon attaches the patella to the lower leg (tibia) and is essential for straightening the leg. A tendon is the fibrous tissue that attaches muscle to bone in the human body. Rupture can occur from a sudden forceful straightening of the leg, from a direct blow to the tendon, or from a penetrating injury such as a laceration.

Symptoms

Knee pain, inability to straighten leg at the knee (extend), anterior knee tenderness, anterior knee swelling.
