About Oral candidiasis (yeast mouth infection)

A yeast infection in the mouth is also called thrush. The yeast is usually a type named `candida.` Yeast in the mouth causes painful white patches in the throat and sometimes on the tongue. Thrush is seen in people with a weak immune system. It can also occur in people who use inhaled steroids to treat asthma.

Symptoms

Mouth pain, white patches in the mouth and tongue, pain with swallowing.

Tests & Diagnostics

A history and physical exam will be performed. If the diagnosis seems obvious and you have a reason to be at risk for thrush, no tests may be needed. Microscopic evaluation and/or culture of mouth scrapings can be done.

Conventional treatment summary

Antifungal mouthwash or lozenges are given. These are usually used for 5-10 days. If they don't work, other medication may be prescribed.
