About Adenovirus infection (virus infection)

A virus that is a common cause of upper respiratory tract infections. The virus can also cause gastroenteritis and conjunctivitis. These viral infections are common in children and can be very contagious.

Symptoms

Fever, cough, diarrhea, swollen red eyes, rash, breathing problems, ear pain, painful urination.

A history and physical exam will be performed. A viral culture may be done, but it is rarely needed.

Conventional treatment summary

Therapy is aimed at relieving symptoms and reducing inflammation. Treatment includes: observation, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications/NSAIDs (ibuprofen/Motrin or Advil, naproxen/Naprosyn), and acetaminophen (Tylenol). Steroids may be prescribed for eye involvement.
