About Avascular necrosis (death of bone)

This condition occurs when then bone dies because of a decreased blood supply. The dead and bone is weak and small fractures can occur causing the symptoms experienced. The hip is the most commonly affected area followed by the shoulders and knees. The main causes of this condition are trauma, alcohol use, and taking steroid medications. This condition is also called aseptic necrosis.

Symptoms

Pain, decreased motion, swelling, pain with movement, stiffness in joint.

Tests & Diagnostics

A history and physical exam will be performed. A bone scan and/or MRI is needed to identify the disorder.

Common tests: Bone scan, MRI.

Conventional treatment summary

Treatment depends on the area involved and the extent of the bone damage. Whatever is causing the death of the bone will be treated to prevent further damage. Other options include surgery, rest, and splinting.
