A problem that occurs after a patient receives a blood transfusion. The immune system launches a response against the new blood cells or other parts of the transfusion. Allergic reactions and hemolysis (breakdown of blood cells) are the two most common types of reactions.Symptoms
Fever, chills, rash, shortness of breath, bloody urine, fainting.Tests & Diagnostics
A history and physical exam will be performed. Blood tests will be done to determine the cause and extent of the transfusion reaction.Conventional treatment summary
Stopping the transfusion. Blood tests to determine the cause of the reaction. Intravenous fluids, acetaminophen (Tylenol), pain relievers, antihistamines, and corticosteroids can all be used depending on the reaction.Medical specialties
