About Medications that cause bleeding

Many medications increase the risk of bleeding, especially antiplatelet medications and anticoagulants. Antiplatelet medications include: aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), and prasugrel (Effient). Anticoagulant medications include: warfarin (Coumadin), heparin, and enoxaparin (Lovenox).

Symptoms

Easy bruising, easy bleeding, nose bleeding, blood in stools, black tarry stools.

Tests & Diagnostics

A history and physical exam will be performed. Patients taking warfarin will have periodic blood tests to determine the proper dose.

Common tests: BHCG, Complete blood count (CBC), CT Scan, EKG.
