White coat hypertension

About White coat hypertension

A phenomenon in which people only have elevated blood pressure readings in the doctor's office and not when measured outside the clinical arena. The cause is thought to be anxiety produced by the clinic visit.

Symptoms

No symptoms beside anxiety are experienced. Some patients do not overtly feel anxious.

Tests & Diagnostics

A history and physical exam will be performed. Normal blood pressure readings outside the medical clinic with elevated readings in the doctor's office.

Conventional treatment summary

Blood pressure medication is usually not needed if indeed the blood pressure readings are clearly within the normal range when the person is not in a clinical setting.
