Iridoid glycosides (aucubin), saponins, mucilage, flavonoids
Pharmacology
Traditional Western respiratory herb with demulcent (mucous-membrane-soothing) and mild expectorant action. Mucilage coats irritated airway tissue; saponins promote expectoration. No significant bronchodilator effect.
General dosage
Tea: 1-2 tsp dried leaf in hot water, 2-3 times daily. Tincture: 2-4 ml three times daily.
Contraindications
Generally very safe; strain tea through cloth to remove leaf hairs that can irritate the throat.
Interactions
No known significant interactions at traditional doses.
