About Trichomonas vaginalis infection

Trichomonas vaginalis is a protozoa that affects the genitourinary tract. It commonly leads to infections of the vagina causing inflammation known as vaginitis. It is often spread through sexual contact. Men can become infected as well. Both sexual partners need to be treated to eradicate the infection.

Symptoms

Women: painful sexual intercourse, vaginal itching, vaginal discharge (greenish-yellow, frothy or foamy), foul smelling discharge. Men: most often no symptoms; burning after urination, burning after ejaculation, slight discharge from urethra.

Tests & Diagnostics

A history and physical exam will be performed. A wet prep of the vaginal secretions is done revealing the organisms.

Conventional treatment summary

Treatment includes antibiotics (metronidazole/Flagyl) and the treatment of all sexual partners to prevent recurrence. One must avoid alcohol while taking metronidazole to prevent severe nausea and vomiting.
