About Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD)

Characterized by an excessive preoccupation with a real or imagined defect in a patient's physical appearance. The cause of this disorder is not known but felt to represent a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Body dysmorphic disorder can lead to anxiety, phobias, and depression, sometimes with suicidal thoughts and actions.

Symptoms

Anxiety, stress, picking at skin, excessively checking appearance in a mirror, hiding any imperfections, excessive grooming, seeking reassurance from others about how they look, getting cosmetic surgery.

A history and physical exam will be performed. A psychological evaluation will be done.
