Epitalon (Epithalon)
Epitalon (epithalon) is a synthetic four-amino-acid peptide promoted for aging and sleep. See what lab, animal and small human studies show, and what FDA said in 2026.

Naming: epitalon, epithalon, epithalamin
Epitalon and epithalon are the same name spelled two ways, and AEDG is its amino-acid shorthand. Epithalamin is a different thing: a polypeptide extract originally made from the pineal gland of cattle. Epitalon was made synthetically based on the amino-acid content of that extract. FDA treats the two as different substances. [1] FDA also notes that epitalon is a common name rather than an official nonproprietary name, that free base and acetate salt forms are different ingredients, and that many sources do not say which form was used. [1] So a study of epithalamin, or of one form, cannot simply be applied to another product. See research peptide naming and identity problems. What the research shows
- Cells. A 2025 study reported that epitalon lengthened telomeres, the protective ends of chromosomes, in several human cell lines, including breast-cancer cell lines, partly through a cancer-associated pathway called ALT. [3] A correction notice was later published for this paper. [4] Label: preclinical (cells/animals only). Longer telomeres in a dish are not a human health outcome.
- Animals. FDA's reviewers describe older studies in mice and monkeys, with melatonin changes in monkeys and fewer spontaneous tumors in female mice. They judged these too limited in dose, duration and sex to show whether epitalon could cause or prevent cancer. [1]
- People. Evidence is limited to small physiological or biomarker studies and an older controlled study in retinitis pigmentosa; no adequately powered randomized trial has established benefit. [2] One placebo-controlled study of a sublingual spray in 40 adults with low melatonin-metabolite levels reported higher levels after treatment, but FDA noted it did not specify blinding, and was short and small. [1] A retinal study reported a positive effect in 90% of patients, but its abstract gives no sample size or blinding details. [5] Label: promising but limited for melatonin-related biomarkers; insufficient evidence for aging, sleep disorders or any disease outcome.
- Registered trials. ClinicalTrials.gov lists one early-phase study (48 participants, estimated) of a topical serum that includes epitalon among several peptides, not a study of epitalon alone. [6]
Marketing claims versus evidence
Claims that epitalon reverses aging, lengthens life or "resets" telomeres in people are marketing claims. Proper evidence not found for any of them in human trials of survival or disease. See peptides and aging claims.Frequently asked questions
Are epitalon and epithalon different?
No, they are two spellings of the same name. Epithalamin is a different pineal-gland extract. [1]
Does epitalon lengthen telomeres in people?
Proper evidence not found in people. The telomere findings come from cell lines. [3]
Is epitalon approved for sleep or aging?
We found no approval from any regulator we could read. FDA's reviewers found no evidence of effectiveness for insomnia. [1]
Is it safe?
Unknown. FDA found no clinical safety data and flagged unresolved cancer and immunogenicity questions. [1]

How to read the evidence labels
Labels used on this page: preclinical (cells/animals only), insufficient evidence, promising but limited, marketing claim and Proper evidence not found. A biomarker is a lab value, not a health outcome.
Regulatory status
- United States. Epitalon is not a component of an FDA-approved drug, and has no USP or NF monograph. In May 2026 FDA reviewers proposed not adding it to the 503A bulks list (the list of substances pharmacies may compound from) because it is not well characterized, lacks safety data and effectiveness evidence for insomnia, and approved insomnia drugs exist. [1] The Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee scheduled epitalon for discussion on July 24, 2026. [7] Advisory committees give non-binding advice, and I could not read an official FDA vote record or final decision, so none is stated here. FDA's older category 2 page lists epitalon among withdrawn nominations, citing immunogenicity risk and no safety data for the proposed route. [8]
- Other countries. FDA's briefing says no epitalon product is approved in Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and several other countries, and none is authorized by the EMA. [1] We did not read those regulators' own pages.
Laws change and this is not legal advice.
