Quick summary
Semax and Selank are short synthetic peptides studied in small, mostly Russian trials. They are marketed online as "nootropic" or calming peptides. Human evidence is limited to small studies, several published in Russian-language journals, and much of the science is in cells and animals. Evidence labels used here: promising but limited, preclinical (cells/animals only), insufficient evidence and marketing claim. No dosing, sourcing or use instructions are given.Semax
Semax is described in the research literature as a neuroprotective peptide drug. [1]- Stroke recovery. A Russian report followed 110 patients after ischemic stroke, grouped by rehabilitation timing and by whether they received Semax. The authors reported higher blood BDNF levels and better functional scores with Semax. [2] BDNF is a biomarker, the groups were not described as blinded, and the abstract does not name a placebo group. Label: promising but limited.
- Mouse model. In a 2025 study of mice bred to model Alzheimer's disease, Semax and a derivative improved test performance and reduced amyloid deposits. [1] This is preclinical (cells/animals only). It does not show benefit in people with Alzheimer's.
- Marketing. Claims of focus or memory benefit in healthy people: Proper evidence not found in the sources we checked (a PubMed search for Semax clinical trials returned titles on stroke, optic nerve disease and motor neuron disease, not healthy-adult trials).
Selank
Selank is a seven-amino-acid peptide (a heptapeptide). [3]- Anxiety. In a Russian study of 62 patients with generalized anxiety disorder and neurasthenia, Selank (30 patients) was compared with the benzodiazepine medazepam (32 patients). The anxiolytic effects were reported as similar. [4] This was a small study without a placebo group in the abstract. Label: promising but limited.
- Lab findings. Commonly used anti-anxiety drugs act on the brain's GABA system. In a laboratory binding study, Selank acted as a positive allosteric modulator of GABA binding. [3] Preclinical (cells/animals only).
Neurological Research
Across both peptides, the human studies found were small and mostly measured symptom scales or blood markers. In the searches done for this guide, we did not find a large placebo-controlled trial. Because the lab findings are not human outcomes, they cannot show that these peptides improve memory, mood or focus. For everyday, evidence-based approaches, see how to improve focus and memory.Regulatory status
United States. FDA's compounding page lists Semax (heptapeptide) and Selank acetate. For Semax, FDA says it has no, or limited, safety information for proposed routes, and for Selank it lacks important information about safety in humans; both carry immunogenicity concerns. Their nominations are on the page's withdrawn list (current as of April 22, 2026). [5] Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved. [6] Russia and elsewhere. Proper evidence not found: we could not read a Russian or other regulator's page for either peptide, so we do not state their status there. Rules change; this is not legal advice.Risks
Safety data are thin. Unapproved injectable or nasal products can vary in quality, and FDA warns that products outside regulatory safeguards may be contaminated, counterfeit or contain different ingredients. [7] Selank interacts with GABA binding in the lab, and no human interaction data with medicines were found. Anyone taking antidepressants, sedatives or anxiety medicines should talk with their prescriber. For general guidance see peptide safety and adverse events and how to evaluate peptide claims.Frequently asked questions
Is Semax approved in the United States?
We found no FDA approval. FDA's compounding page says it has no, or limited, safety information for Semax. [5]
Does Selank treat anxiety?
A small Russian study reported effects similar to a benzodiazepine, but it lacked a placebo group in the abstract and has not been confirmed in large trials we could find. [4]
Do Semax or Selank improve memory in healthy people?
Proper evidence not found in the sources checked. Findings are mostly from animals and cells.
Are there risks?
Human safety data are limited. FDA says it lacks important information on Selank's safety in humans. [5]
