Acupuncture Claim Check: Fertility and Weight-Loss Promises

What trials and reviews actually found for acupuncture and fertility, IVF, polycystic ovary syndrome and weight loss, with honest limits on both the promises and the studies.

Content last updated . This page has not been medically reviewed.

Why these two claims

Fertility and weight loss are two areas where acupuncture is promoted strongly and where people feel pressure and hope. This page checks the promises against what we could read. It is information only and not a reason to delay fertility evaluation or weight-related medical care. Evidence labels used: promising but limited, mixed, insufficient evidence, no good evidence of benefit. Fuller guides: Acupuncture for Fertility and IVF and Acupuncture for Weight Loss.

Fertility and IVF

QuestionWhat the source foundLabel
Does acupuncture raise live birth with IVF, compared with sham?A 2021 review of 6 studies (2,507 participants) found no difference in pregnancy or live birth rates. [1] A separate 2021 meta-analysis of 8 trials (3,607 women) found no statistically significant difference at embryo transfer, with high-certainty evidence for live birth and miscarriage. [2]No good evidence of benefit
Is there a single large sham trial? In an Australian and New Zealand trial of 848 women, live birth occurred in 18.3% with acupuncture and 17.8% with sham (risk difference 0.5%, 95% CI -4.9% to 5.8%). [3]No difference found
Older Cochrane reviewIn 2013, 20 trials found no evidence acupuncture improves live birth or pregnancy rates in assisted conception, with low-quality evidence. [4]Older; consistent
PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome)In 1,000 women in China, active acupuncture (with or without clomiphene) did not increase live births versus control acupuncture and placebo. Clomiphene did raise live birth. [5]No good evidence of benefit for live birth in that trial

What these designs can and cannot show. Sham-controlled trials test whether the specific needling adds anything beyond the experience of treatment. The sham in the Australian trial was a non-penetrating needle placed away from the true points. [3] Some acupuncture researchers argue such a control may itself have effects, so "no difference" does not prove sham did nothing. [6] Authors of a reanalysis of the PCOS trial also argued the design was flawed. [7] Those are critiques, not new trials; they show the debate, and the published trial results are unchanged. A trial of acupuncture versus no treatment would not be blinded, so it cannot separate needle effects from expectation.

Side effects seen in trials were mild: discomfort and bruising in the IVF meta-analysis. [2] In the PCOS trial, bruising and diarrhea were more common with active acupuncture. [5]

Weight loss

QuestionWhat the source foundLabel
Body acupuncture versus shamA 2026 review of 20 trials (2,261 people) found about 1.56 kg more weight loss than placebo or sham in 8 studies (n = 412). [8]Promising but limited
Versus lifestyle careAbout 1.72 kg more in 5 studies (n = 237). [8]Promising but limited
CertaintyThe authors rated the evidence low to moderate and said it prevents definitive conclusions. [8]Low to moderate
Ear (auricular) stimulationA 2026 review pooled a small effect on weight, but its prediction interval included no effect. [9] A 2019 review judged ear acupressure effective but called for better double-blind trials. [10]Mixed / promising but limited

The 2026 acupuncture review noted that only one trial reported adverse events systematically. [8] Modest average changes in small trials do not mean acupuncture treats obesity, and the authors describe acupuncture as complementary rather than primary care. [8] We did not read a guideline or regulator statement on acupuncture for weight, and we did not read the reviews' full texts.

Signs a promise has gone too far

  • A guarantee of pregnancy or a set number of pounds lost.
  • Telling you to skip fertility testing, or stop prescribed fertility or weight medicines.
  • Selling supplements or diet plans as part of "acupuncture weight loss."

If you are struggling to conceive, ask a doctor about evaluation; for weight, see Healthy Weight Basics and Weight Loss Medications and Medical Care. If you are pregnant, tell any practitioner and see Acupuncture in Pregnancy.
