United States
NCCIH says there is no significant regulation of Ayurvedic practice or education in the US, and no state requires a practitioner to have a license. [1] More broadly, there is no standardized national credentialing system for complementary health practitioners; states decide. [2] [3]The main professional certification body is the National Ayurvedic Medical Association Certification Board (NAMACB). It lists tiers: Ayurvedic Health Counselor (600+ hours of qualifying US-based education, focused on diet and lifestyle), Ayurvedic Practitioner (1,500-2,500 hours) and Certified Advanced Ayurvedic Practitioner (4,000+ hours, with overview training in conventional medicine). [4] [5] [6] [7] It says certification means completing an accredited course and passing an exam. [8] It also says it is a certification board that does not confer titles, and advises checking state rules on titles like "Doctor". [9] [10]
NAMACB says that from July 1, 2026, graduates of programs that are not accredited or candidates for accreditation by the Ayurvedic Accreditation Commission will no longer be eligible for its exams, except BAMS graduates. [11] It notes that not all programs meet its requirements. [12]
Certification is not a state license and does not by itself give legal authority to diagnose or treat. Licensing and certification are not always a guarantee of qualification. [13]
United Kingdom
The Ayurvedic Professionals Association (APA) describes itself as a non-profit, voluntary register for Ayurveda in the UK. [14] Its members are bound by its code of ethics and carry insurance. [15] The APA says it is not an accrediting body for courses. [16] It has categories from BAMS holders and diploma or degree practitioners with 3,600 teaching hours, down to body therapists, and says only categories A and B have extensive Ayurvedic training. [17] [18] [19] We did not read a UK government statement on the legal status of Ayurveda, so we do not make a claim beyond the APA's own description.Australia
A 2022 SBS News report said only traditional Chinese medicine, among fields including Ayurveda, is registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. [20] This was a news report, and the regulator's own page did not load readable text for us, so check Ahpra directly for the current position.Canada, Europe and elsewhere
We did not read a regulator or professional body statement for Canada, EU countries or other places, so we make no claim. Look for the national or provincial health regulator, and ask any practitioner what their title legally means where you live.International reference
WHO's 2022 benchmarks for Ayurveda training are intended as a reference for national authorities setting standards. [21] They are not a license.Safety points
- Titles such as "doctor" may be used in different ways; ask for the awarding body.
- Tell your regular doctor about any Ayurvedic care; do not stop prescribed medicines.
- Products can carry risks. See Ayurvedic products: heavy metals and quality and how Ayurvedic products are regulated.
For checking a specific person, use the checklist. See also Ayurveda outside India.
