Vamana (Therapeutic Emesis): Risks and Evidence
Vamana is Ayurvedic therapeutic induced vomiting. Risks come first here, then what small studies and case reports show and who should not consider it. No instructions are given.

Safety first
Vamana means deliberately inducing vomiting. This page describes it; it does not tell anyone how to do it, and it should never be attempted at home. Repeated vomiting causes loss of fluid and body salts, and in severe cases dehydration. [1] [2] Get urgent care (911 in the US) for fainting, confusion, chest pain, trouble breathing or vomit that contains blood or looks like coffee grounds; the NHS lists the last two among reasons to call 999 in the UK. [3] For a possible poisoning, Poison Help in the US is 1-800-222-1222. [4]What vamana is
Vamana is therapeutic emesis, one of two procedures described as the major biopurification (cleansing) procedures in Ayurveda, the other being virechana. [5] In the tradition's terms, oiling and sweating move doshas toward the gut so that emesis or purgation can remove them [6], and one Ayurvedic paper describes this kind of cleansing as aimed at kapha. [7] These are traditional explanations, not measured biology. It is given after oiling and sweating and followed by a specialized diet. [5] See Purvakarma and the procedure overview."Vamana dhauti" also appears in yoga, described in a 2026 pilot trial as a yoga practice. [8] It is a different thing; this page is about the Ayurvedic clinical procedure only.
What research shows
| Question | What the source found | Label |
|---|---|---|
| Type 2 diabetes | Pilot, 49 patients, randomized but open-label, three arms. Everyone in all arms improved blood sugar, including those on the drug glibenclamide; the vamana arm also had larger falls in cholesterol and BMI; no adverse event observed [7] | insufficient evidence (small, unblinded, authors from Ayurvedic institutions) |
| Excessive daytime sleepiness | 10 people, single arm with no comparison group; sleepiness scores fell [9] | insufficient evidence |
| Psoriasis, hives | Case reports of courses that included vamana [10] [11] | traditional use / anecdote |
| Healthy people, "anti-aging" | A 2026 study protocol plans emesis in spring and purgation in autumn in 53 healthy adults, without a control group; no results yet [5] | preclinical / planned |
| How often serious harm occurs | No incidence data found | Proper evidence not found |
A single-arm study cannot separate the effect of the treatment from expectation, the natural course of symptoms or other care. In all the studies we read, participants knew they were receiving the treatment. Ayurvedic trials often under-report harm: only about one in eight studies of Ayush treatments for spine conditions reported any adverse event. [12] "No adverse event observed" in a small pilot therefore does not establish safety.
Risks and who should avoid it
- Dehydration and salt imbalance. Severe vomiting is a recognized cause. [1] Babies, children and older adults are most at risk, along with people with diabetes or on water pills. [2]
- Other risks. We did not find a source that measured other harms of induced vomiting for vamana, such as breathing vomit into the lungs. Not finding data is not the same as there being no risk.
- Product quality. Some Ayurvedic preparations contain toxic lead, mercury or arsenic. [13]
- Pregnancy, nursing, heart, kidney, bowel or diabetes problems, regular medicines: speak to a doctor first. [13] No source we read lists formal contraindications, so ask the clinician offering it to explain theirs.
Practitioners and regulation
In the US there is no significant regulation of Ayurvedic practice or state license. [13] In India, formal Ayurveda degrees exist, but no national online practitioner register has been described. [14] See Choosing an Ayurvedic Practitioner and Panchakarma Safety.Frequently asked questions
Is vamana the same as making yourself vomit?
In studies it is a clinical procedure given after preparation and followed by a specialized diet, not self-induced vomiting. [5] We give no instructions, and doing it on your own risks dehydration. [2]
Does vamana remove toxins or cure disease?
Proper evidence not found for toxin removal, and no cure claim is supported. Studies are small pilots. [7]
Does vamana help diabetes?
A 49-person open-label pilot found blood sugar fell in every group, including the group on a standard drug, so the effect of vamana itself cannot be separated. [7] Do not change diabetes medicine without your prescriber.
Is vamana dangerous?
Vomiting causes fluid and salt loss, which can be serious. [1] We found no source with serious-event rates.
Who offers vamana safely?
We cannot recommend providers. Ask about training, how fluids and salts are checked, and what happens if you feel unwell; see the practitioner guide linked above.
