Back to YogaWhat the text is
The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is a short Sanskrit text in the sutra style, which means very brief statements designed to be memorized and then explained by a teacher. [1] It has about 1200 words in 195 sutras. [1] Traditional Vedic schools accept it as an authoritative source on yoga, and Hindu circles still do. [1] It is a text about the mind, meditation and liberation, not a medical or fitness manual.Who and when
Very little is known about Patanjali. Tradition links him to a grammarian of the same name, and scholars discuss whether that is likely. [1] The academic reference says the date can only be inferred from the text: most scholars place it shortly after the turn of the Common Era (about the first or second century CE), some earlier, and it is no later than the fifth century CE. [1]The same reference stresses that Patanjali did not invent yoga. He systematized earlier practices, and the first sutra itself speaks of continuing the teachings of yoga. [1] An encyclopedia article adds that the text draws on Samkhya, Buddhist traditions and older ascetic strands, and that one scholar argues the fourth chapter was added later. [2] See the history of yoga for the wider timeline.
How it is organized
The text has four chapters, called padas. [1]| Chapter | Theme, as the academic reference describes it |
|---|---|
| Defines yoga as the cessation of active states of mind and outlines stages of insight. [1] |
| Practices and ethical observances that prepare for serious meditation. [1] |
| Extraordinary powers that can arise in deep concentration, which the reference reads as a warning against being side-tracked. [1] |
| Liberation, including a response to Buddhist challenges. [1] |
What it teaches
The core project is to explain how ignorance causes suffering and how it is removed so that liberation can be reached. [1] The second chapter sets out the eight limbs of yoga, from ethical restraints to absorption. [1] Posture gets just three sutras with nine words in total, less than one percent of the text. [1] The ethical restraints and observances (the yamas and niyamas) get 20 sutras, with non-violence singled out by commentators as the root. [1]The text also recommends devotion to God, Ishvara, as one route to its goal. [1] The reference describes Patanjali's approach as undogmatic and nonsectarian. Read the eight limbs of yoga for the list and yoga and its roots in Hindu, Buddhist and Jain traditions for context.
Reading it with care
- Commentary matters. The sutras are cryptic on their own and were designed to be used with a teacher, so the reference says trying to bypass commentary is unrealistic. [1]
- Translations differ. Modern commentaries have often adjusted the text to modern or Western sensibilities. [1]
- Its fame is recent. One scholar, as summarized in an encyclopedia article, argues the text fell into relative obscurity from the twelfth to the nineteenth century and rose to prominence in the twentieth, helped by Swami Vivekananda and the Theosophical Society. [2]
- Traditional framework, not biology. Concepts such as purusha (pure consciousness) and prakriti (nature) are philosophical ideas, not findings from physiology. [2]
Health claims
Proper evidence not found, in the sources read, that the Sutras give medical guidance, or that practicing according to their eight-part scheme has been tested in clinical trials. I searched PubMed on 2026-10-22 for "eight limbs of yoga" combined with randomized controlled trial and found no results. Studies of yoga for health usually test postures, breathing or meditation separately; see yoga evidence by outcome. If you have a medical concern, speak with a clinician rather than relying on any text.Related pages

What is the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali?
A Sanskrit text of 195 sutras divided into four chapters that systematizes yoga practice and philosophy, and that traditional Vedic schools treat as authoritative. [1]
Who was Patanjali?
Very little is known. Tradition identifies him with a grammarian and a writer on medicine, a link scholars debate. [1]
When was it written?
Most scholars say about the first or second century CE, and some earlier. The reference says it was no later than the fifth century CE. [1]
Does the text teach yoga poses?
Only briefly. Posture is covered in three sutras, and the text uses the word asana to mean a steady, comfortable seat for meditation. [1]
Do the Sutras prove yoga improves health?
No. The text is about liberation and the mind. Proper evidence not found, in the sources read, of trials testing the Sutras' whole system. For tested outcomes, a Cochrane review of yoga for chronic low back pain found small benefits that were not clinically important. [3]
