No source we could read compares loose-leaf and bagged herbal tea for benefit or safety of the herb itself. What exists is research on the bag material: bags that contain plastic have been measured releasing very large numbers of tiny plastic particles into hot water. That is a reason to check what a bag is made of. It is not proof of harm, and it does not show that loose leaf is free of risk.
What research found about bag material
| Question | What the source found | Type of evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Do plastic bags shed particles in hot water? | One 2019 study found that steeping a single plastic teabag (nylon and polyethylene terephthalate) at 95 degrees C released about 11.6 billion microplastics and 3.1 billion nanoplastics into a cup [2] | Laboratory measurement of bags |
| Is that seen across studies? | A 2026 systematic review of 19 studies found plastic-containing bags (for example non-woven polypropylene, nylon) released often billions of particles per bag in hot water, typically at 95 degrees C or above [3] | Systematic review of laboratory studies |
| Do all materials release the same amount? | Release depended on bag material, water temperature, brewing time and agitation; paper and woven nylon showed lower release, but even "eco-friendly" composite bags released some [3] | Systematic review |
| Does it harm people? | The 2026 review says human health risk assessments are lacking and exposure estimates are preliminary [3] | Insufficient evidence |
| Any animal data? | The 2019 study reported dose-dependent behavioral and developmental effects in invertebrates exposed to the released particles [2] | Preclinical (invertebrates only) |
A comment on the 2019 paper and the authors' response were later published. [4] We read only their titles, so we cannot say how they changed the picture. Treat the 2019 numbers as one early laboratory estimate and the 2026 review as the broader summary.
What is not known
- Loose leaf and plastic: the 2026 review looked at tea bags, so it does not tell us how much plastic, if any, a loose-leaf product picks up from its packaging. [3] Proper evidence not found for loose-leaf herbal tea in the sources we read; we searched PubMed for tea-bag microplastic and loose-leaf comparison studies.
- Herb content: we found no study comparing how much of a herb's compounds reach the cup from a bag versus loose leaf. The amount of herb per serving is better judged from the label than from the form.
- Which bag a product uses: a label may not say. Our page on herbal tea blends and what labels hide covers other gaps in labels.
Other quality points that do not depend on form
Pesticide, metal and microbe contamination has been measured in herbal teas, but the studies we read did not compare bags with loose leaf. [5][6] See organic labels and pesticide residues and storing herbal tea. For the larger picture of how teas are prepared, see how herbal tea is prepared.
Frequently asked questions
Are loose-leaf herbal teas healthier than tea bags?
Proper evidence not found. We did not find a study comparing the two for health outcomes. The research we read concerns plastic released by some bags. [3]
Do tea bags release microplastics?
Bags that contain plastic did, in laboratory studies of hot water; paper and woven nylon released less. [3]
Is this proven to harm people?
No. The 2026 review says human health risk assessments are lacking. [3]
Does the EU treat bags and loose herbs differently?
Only in handling: strain loose herbs, squeeze sachets. [1]
What should I do about it?
This is information, not advice. You can check what a bag is made of with the maker, and ask a pharmacist about the herb itself.

How regulators treat the two forms
The EU's herbal medicines committee (HMPC) says herbal teas are usually supplied in bulk form or in sachets. [1] Its leaflet template gives different handling: loose herbs are filtered through a tea strainer and the residue may be pressed, while sachets may be gently squeezed. [1] The template does not say that one form is better.
Who should ask
If you take medicines, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are choosing a tea for a child, the herb matters more than the bag. Ask a pharmacist or clinician, and see medication interactions.
