B-Complex vs Individual B Vitamins: When Each Is Used and What Is Known

B-complex products versus single B vitamins: what each contains, when a single B vitamin is used, what trials of combinations found, and why totals and upper levels matter.

Content last updated . This page has not been medically reviewed.

Quick answer
There are eight B vitamins: thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, B6, biotin, folate and B12. [1] A B-complex product combines several of them; a single B vitamin product contains one. Vitamin B6, for example, is sold in multivitamin, B-complex and single-nutrient products. [2] We found no standard recipe for a B-complex in the sources we read, so the label is the only guide. One is not better than the other for everyone. A single vitamin fits a specific, diagnosed need. Whether a complex fits anyone depends on which B vitamins a clinician finds low.

When a single B vitamin is used

  • Folic acid before and in early pregnancy. The NHS recommends a 400 microgram folic acid supplement daily for anyone who is pregnant, trying for a baby or could become pregnant, until 12 weeks of pregnancy. [1] Some women are advised 5 mg by a doctor. [1]
  • Vitamin B12. The NHS says vegans may not get enough B12 because it is not found naturally in fruit, vegetables and grains. [1] Confirmed B12 deficiency is managed by a clinician. See vitamin B12 forms.
  • Treating a diagnosed deficiency of one vitamin is clinician-led, whatever the product.

What research found on combinations

QuestionWhat the source foundStrength
Mood and stress (16 trials, 2,015 people; at least 3 B vitamins for 4+ weeks)Stress improved a little (SMD 0.23); depressive symptoms did not reach significance; no effect on anxiety. Benefit may be larger in people at risk from poor nutrient status or mood. [3]Mixed
Thinking and memory (Cochrane, folic acid, B12, B6 vs placebo, mostly people in their 60s-70s)Probably little or no effect on global cognitive function up to 5 years. [4]No good evidence of benefit in healthy older adults
Heart disease via homocysteine (Cochrane, 15 trials, 71,422 people)No difference in heart attack or death; stroke was slightly lower (RR 0.90). [5]Mixed
"Energy" in people who are not deficientProper evidence not found in the sources we read. B vitamins help release energy from food, which is a nutritional role and not proof that extra amounts raise energy. [1]Marketing claim

The mood analysis pooled combinations, so it cannot say which B vitamin did what; and a complex cannot show that one ingredient was needed. See B vitamins overview and vitamin B12 and energy claims.

Why totals matter: UK guidance per vitamin

The NHS lists amounts of each B vitamin from supplements that are unlikely to cause harm in the UK:
VitaminUK supplement guidance (NHS, 2020)
Thiamin (B1)100 mg or less a day
Riboflavin (B2)40 mg or less a day
Niacin (B3)17 mg or less nicotinic acid, or 500 mg or less nicotinamide
Pantothenic acid200 mg or less a day
Vitamin B6Not more than 10 mg a day unless advised by a doctor
Biotin0.9 mg or less a day
Folic acid1 mg or less a day
Vitamin B122 mg or less a day

All from [1]. These are UK guidance, not requirements, and other countries differ. EFSA's EU upper level for vitamin B6 is 12 mg a day, for example. [6] Add up what a multivitamin, a B-complex and any single B product give you. Study amounts in trials are not advice. See RDA, AI, DV and UL explained.

Frequently asked questions

Is B-complex better than taking B12 alone?

Neither is better for everyone. B12 alone suits a diagnosed or likely B12 need, such as a vegan diet. [1] A complex gives several B vitamins at once, which also means several upper levels to watch.

Does B-complex give you energy?

Proper evidence not found for people who are not deficient. B vitamins help release energy from food, but that does not mean extra amounts add energy. [1]

Does B-complex help stress or mood?

A review of 16 trials found a small benefit for stress, none clearly for depression and none for anxiety. [3]

Can I take too much from a B-complex?

Yes, especially of B6, niacin and folic acid. [1] Check each ingredient against official levels.

Do B vitamins prevent memory loss or heart disease?

Trials of folic acid, B12 and B6 found little or no effect on cognition in healthy older adults and no effect on heart attacks. [4] [5]

How to read the evidence labels

Labels used on this page: established nutritional role / deficiency treatment, evidence in adequately nourished people, promising but limited, mixed, no good evidence of benefit, marketing claim. Proper evidence not found means we looked and found nothing usable.

Safety first
A B-complex does not carry the same risk as a single B vitamin, but it can add up. Several B vitamins have a documented ceiling: for example, the NHS (UK) says vitamin B6 at 200 mg a day or more can cause nerve damage, and folic acid above 1 mg a day can mask the symptoms of B12 deficiency. [1] If you have kidney or liver disease, take regular medicines, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are giving anything to a child, ask a clinician or pharmacist first. Numbness, tingling or unsteadiness while taking B vitamins needs medical attention. See medication interactions.
