Psilocybin Mushrooms vs Amanita
Psilocybin mushrooms and Amanita muscaria (fly agaric) are different fungi with different compounds, effects, research and risks. This guide explains the difference and poisoning dangers.

Urgent first. Eating a wild mushroom or a mushroom product can cause poisoning. If someone has severe drowsiness, confusion, vomiting, seizures, slowed breathing or collapse, call 911 (US) or your local emergency number. US Poison Help is 1-800-222-1222. See plant and mushroom poisoning. This page cannot tell you whether any mushroom is safe, and a photo or a name is never a safety assurance. It is information only: no amounts, foraging, preparation or sourcing advice.
Evidence labels used here: approved medicine, promising but limited, insufficient evidence, evidence of harm, marketing claim. Where we looked and found nothing usable, we write "Proper evidence not found."
Definitions
- Psilocybin mushrooms is a common-language group of fungi whose members contain psilocybin; the compounds typically occur in most species of the genus Psilocybe. [1] The body converts psilocybin into psilocin. [2] A well-known species name, Psilocybe cubensis, is an accepted name in the GBIF taxonomy. [3]
- Amanita muscaria (fly agaric) is a different fungus in a different family (Amanitaceae). [4] It contains ibotenic acid and muscimol. [5]
These are not interchangeable. Species and common names do not tell you what a particular mushroom or product contains. See species identification and naming limits.
Side-by-side
| Psilocybin mushrooms | Amanita muscaria | |
|---|---|---|
| Key compounds | Psilocybin, converted to psilocin [2] | Ibotenic acid and muscimol [5] |
| Main action | Psilocin acts at serotonin 5-HT2A receptors [6] | Ibotenic acid acts at NMDA and metabotropic glutamate receptors; muscimol is a GABA-type agonist [5] |
| Class | Classic psychedelic [7] | Not a classic psychedelic; different receptor targets [5] |
| Research as medicine | Psilocybin studied in trials; FDA Breakthrough Therapy designation for some formulations [2] | Proper evidence not found for clinical trials as a treatment (we checked the toxicology reviews below) |
| US federal Schedule I | Psilocybin and psilocin (psilocyn) listed [8] | Muscimol, ibotenic acid and Amanita muscaria not found in the Schedule I list we read [8] |
What research shows
- Psilocybin, depression: promising but limited. In a 104-person trial psilocybin reduced depression scores more than niacin, with more adverse events. [9]
- Amanita muscaria: Proper evidence not found for benefit in people. What exists is toxicology: a 2025 review and case reports describe it as an uncommon but clinically important cause of mushroom poisoning, with a highly variable toxic profile. [10]
Risks
- Psilocybin. NIDA says psilocybin has low toxicity, typically raises blood pressure and heart rate, and can cause unpleasant experiences. [2] No data exist on safety in pregnancy. [2]
- Amanita muscaria. Two elderly spouses who prepared it at home had rapid-onset stomach symptoms, profound central nervous system depression and cholinergic features, needing intensive care and atropine. Both recovered. [10] Content varies: reviews note differences between species, tissues, drying and heating, and say total dose, preparation and individual susceptibility matter. [5]
- Products. US poison-center data for 2023 to 2024 covered 362 mushroom edible exposures (containing Amanita muscaria, psilocybin or unspecified). Effects were unpredictable, polysubstance exposure raised admission rates, and no deaths were reported. [11] In an Oregon test of eight gummies, the two said to contain Amanita muscaria showed no ibotenic acid or muscimol but did contain psilocin; one labeled psilocybin-free contained psilocybin, and another contained undisclosed THC. [12] Labels cannot be trusted as proof of content.
Legal note
Laws change and this is not legal advice. In the United States, psilocybin and psilocin appear in Schedule I of 21 CFR 1308.11 (read 2026-10-22). [8] We did not find Amanita muscaria, muscimol or ibotenic acid in that list. State and other-country rules were not verified. See legal status by country. No universal winner
Neither is "the safer mushroom." They are different organisms with different chemistry and risks. Full guides: Amanita muscaria, psilocybin mushrooms and Amanita muscaria, muscimol and ibotenic acid.Frequently asked questions
Does Amanita muscaria contain psilocybin?
The review we read names ibotenic acid and muscimol as its main neuroactive compounds, not psilocybin. [5]
Is Amanita muscaria a psychedelic?
It is not a classic psychedelic. Muscimol is a GABA-type agonist and ibotenic acid acts on glutamate receptors, unlike psilocin's 5-HT2A action. [5][6]
Can a mushroom gummy's label tell me what is inside?
Not reliably. In one Oregon test, labels were inaccurate for several products. [12]
Is psilocybin approved as a medicine?
We found no approval in the sources read; NIDA says FDA granted Breakthrough Therapy designation to some formulations being studied. [2]
