Omega-3 for Vegetarians and Vegans: Algal DHA and EPA, ALA Foods and Official Statements
What research shows about EPA and DHA status in vegetarians and vegans, what algal oil studies found, which plant foods supply ALA, and what dietetic and official sources say.

Which fat is which
NCCIH, a US National Institutes of Health center, explains that ALA is found in plant oils such as flaxseed, soybean and canola, and EPA and DHA are found in seafood and fish oil. [1] It adds that algal oils are a vegetarian source of DHA, and some also contain EPA. [1] They are not interchangeable: see ALA, EPA and DHA and what isotope studies show about ALA conversion. What the research found
| Question | What the source found | Strength |
|---|---|---|
| Are vegans' EPA and DHA lower? | A systematic review of 45 studies found significantly reduced EPA and DHA concentrations, particularly in vegan diets [2] | Observational; study designs and diet reporting varied |
| Is the difference as big as intake suggests? | In the EPIC-Norfolk cohort (14,422 adults aged 39 to 78, England), total omega-3 intake in non-fish-eaters was 57 to 80% of fish-eaters' intake, but status differences were considerably smaller [4] | Observational; authors said intervention studies would be needed to confirm |
| Does algal DHA raise DHA levels? | A review of four randomized trials and two cohort studies found all reported significantly higher DHA concentrations; no clear dose or time pattern given so few studies [3] | Biomarker only |
| Do different algal oil forms work alike? | A 28-day randomized placebo-controlled study found two algal oil capsules and an algal-oil-fortified food were bioequivalent sources of DHA by blood measures; amounts tested were 200, 600 and 1,000 mg DHA a day (study amounts, not advice) [5] | Biomarker only; 12 people per group |
| Does low DHA in vegetarian mothers affect children's thinking? | No studies had investigated this [6] | Proper evidence not found |
| Any trial showing algal DHA improves a health outcome in vegans? | Proper evidence not found in the sources we read; the review authors themselves called for studies of health improvements [3] | None |
What dietetic and official sources say
- Dietetic position. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (US) 2016 position says appropriately planned vegetarian, including vegan, diets are nutritionally adequate and appropriate for all life stages, including pregnancy and lactation. [7] The abstract we read says vegans need reliable sources of vitamin B12 [7]; it does not mention omega-3.
- NHS, United Kingdom. For vegans, the NHS lists ground linseed (flaxseed), rapeseed oil, chia seeds, shelled hemp seeds and walnuts as omega-3 sources, and advises eating nuts and seeds rich in omega-3 such as walnuts every day. [8] The page we read does not describe algal oil. For how plant foods compare, see plant sources of omega-3, flaxseed, chia seeds and walnuts.
- A review of plant-based pregnancy. A 2024 review of 11 articles concluded well-planned vegetarian and vegan diets with adequate supplementation of vitamin B12, EPA and DHA are compatible with pregnancy and lactation. [9]
- EFSA, European Union. An adequate intake of 250 mg a day of EPA plus DHA for healthy adults and children is not specific to vegetarians and applies to the combination, not to ALA. [10]
| Group, country | ALA adequate intake | Source and year |
|---|---|---|
| Adults 19 to 50, Canada | 1.6 g a day (men), 1.1 g a day (women) [11] | Health Canada, page dated 2025 |
| Pregnancy, Canada | 1.4 g a day [11] | Health Canada, 2025 |
| Lactation, Canada | 1.3 g a day [11] | Health Canada, 2025 |

Algal oil: what differs
Algal oils are not all the same. EFSA assesses algal oils for infant formula strain by strain: one 2025 opinion concluded an oil from Schizochytrium limacinum was safe under the proposed conditions, while a 2026 opinion on a different Schizochytrium strain concluded its safety could not be established. [12][13] For product choice questions see algal oil and fish oil vs algal oil.Frequently asked questions
Do vegans need an omega-3 supplement?
The sources we read do not say. Studies show lower EPA and DHA in vegans and higher DHA with algal oil, but not whether that improves health. [2][3] A dietitian can review your own case.
Is flaxseed enough?
Flaxseed supplies ALA, not EPA or DHA. [1] See the ALA conversion page for what studies show.
What is a vegan source of DHA?
NCCIH notes algal oils are a vegetarian DHA source, and some also contain EPA. [1]
Is algal oil as effective as fish oil?
Head-to-head clinical outcome trials were not found in what we read; blood DHA rose with algal oil in small studies. [3] See fish oil vs algal oil.
Is a vegan diet safe in pregnancy?
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics says appropriately planned vegan diets are appropriate in pregnancy and lactation, and a 2024 review points to supplementing B12, EPA and DHA. [7][9]

Safety and who should ask first
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding and children. Vegetarian mothers had lower EPA and DHA in breast milk in one review. [6] Ask your midwife, doctor or dietitian; see omega-3 and DHA in pregnancy.
- Medicines and bleeding. The bleeding statement on one prescription label is about a fish-derived product, and we did not find equivalent information for algal oil. [14] Check medication interactions and tell your pharmacist before surgery.
- Allergy to algae oils: Proper evidence not found in the sources we read (we searched PubMed).
- Side effects reported for omega-3 supplements in general are usually mild. [1]
- Quality. Content varies between products; see quality testing and certifications.
