CBD vs CBG and CBD vs CBN
Two short comparisons of CBD against CBG and against CBN, separating approved-medicine evidence for CBD from the limited human research and marketing claims for the minor cannabinoids.

Why compare these three
CBD is the best studied non-intoxicating cannabinoid, and CBG (cannabigerol) and CBN (cannabinol) are minor cannabinoids that products now promote. NCCIH says more than 100 cannabinoids besides THC and CBD have been identified. [1] The question is not which is better but how much human evidence each has. Evidence labels: approved medicine, promising but limited, insufficient evidence, preclinical (cells or animals only), marketing claim. For each in depth see CBD and CBG, CBN and minor cannabinoids.CBD vs CBG
| CBD | CBG | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A cannabinoid; a purified form is the active ingredient in an FDA-approved medicine. [1] | The precursor molecule for the most abundant plant cannabinoids. [2] |
| Approved medicine | Epidiolex, for seizures in Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, Dravet syndrome and tuberous sclerosis complex, ages 1 and up. [3] | None found. |
| Human research | The label's warnings include liver enzyme rises, sleepiness and drug interactions. [4] | A 2024 crossover trial in 34 healthy adults reported lower anxiety and stress after one hemp-derived dose. [5] |
| Label | Approved medicine for the listed seizure disorders | Insufficient evidence in people; most findings are preclinical |
What the CBG literature says. A pharmacology review reports that CBG sits between THC and CBD in its activity at cannabinoid receptors and may have therapeutic potential in neurologic conditions and inflammatory bowel disease (in studies the review describes as early). The authors stress that, unlike CBD, little research has been done on this unregulated molecule. [2] The 2024 trial was small and short, measured a single dose in healthy adults rather than patients, and reported no impairment. [5] Two authors have industry ties, as disclosed in the paper. [5] One small trial is not enough to support health claims.
CBD vs CBN
| CBD | CBN | |
|---|---|---|
| Sleep claims | The FDA lists sleepiness as a common CBD side effect, not a proven treatment. [6] | A review of 99 screened human studies found no clinical trials of CBN using validated sleep measures. [7] |
| Label | Insufficient evidence for sleep | Insufficient evidence; sleep promotion is a marketing claim |
| Intoxication | Not found to be psychoactive by WHO's committee. [8] | Evidence that CBN has cannabis-like effects in humans is mixed, mostly showing none. [7] |
| Legal note (UK) | Pure CBD is not controlled. [9] | Cannabinol is a Class B controlled drug. [9] |
What the CBN review says. A narrative review concluded that CBN research is dated and limited, mostly small studies from the 1970s and 1980s, and that there is insufficient published evidence to support sleep claims. [7] It urged skepticism of manufacturers' claims. [7]
Quality and safety
The FDA says products with CBD may contain less or more than labeled, and may contain unsafe contaminants. [6] Minor-cannabinoid products are generally less studied, so the same caution applies. Anyone who takes prescription medicines should talk with a prescriber first; see medicine interactions and toxicology. To judge a product, see certificates of analysis. No universal winner
CBD has the most human evidence and one approved medicine, along with real risks. CBG and CBN have too little human evidence to say what they do. "Newer" is not "better".Frequently asked questions
Is CBG better than CBD?
There is no evidence for that. CBD has an approved medicine for specific seizure disorders, while CBG has little human research. [3][2]
Does CBN help you sleep?
A review found no clinical trials testing CBN with validated sleep measures, so sleep claims are not supported. [7]
Can CBN get you high?
Evidence that CBN produces cannabis-like effects in humans is mixed, with most evidence showing none. [7]
Are CBG and CBN legal?
It varies. In the UK cannabinol is a Class B drug. [9] We did not verify CBG status elsewhere. See cannabis laws by country.
