Berberine Plants and Products: Barberry, Goldenseal, Oregon Grape and Label Claims
Which plants contain berberine (barberry, goldenseal, Oregon grape, tree turmeric, Coptis), why plant products differ from berberine capsules, and what to check on labels.

Why this matters
Berberine is a single chemical, but it reaches people through many products: purified berberine, whole-plant powders, extracts and tinctures. A plant product is a mixture with other active compounds, so findings about berberine do not automatically apply to the plant, and the reverse is also true. This page is information, not a recommendation. Before using any of these, read the cautions on berberine side effects and interactions and pregnancy, infants and liver conditions.Plants that contain berberine
A review lists berberine as found in Berberis species, including Oregon grape (Berberis aquifolium), barberry (Berberis vulgaris) and tree turmeric (Berberis aristata), and in goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis), Chinese goldthread (Coptis chinensis) and Amur corktree (Phellodendron amurense), among others. [1] Another review says it can be found in the roots, rhizomes and stem bark. [2] Which plant part is used differs by product.| Plant | Notes from the sources we read |
|---|---|
| Barberry (Berberis vulgaris) | Included in a trial review together with berberine; that combined review found no significant change in BMI, so check which one a trial actually used. [3] |
| Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) | Contains berberine and other alkaloids. In 12 healthy volunteers, goldenseal strongly inhibited CYP2D6 and CYP3A4/5 enzymes that clear many medicines. [4] |
| Oregon grape | In cell studies, root extracts changed P-glycoprotein, a transporter that moves some drugs, so they may affect the absorption of drugs that use it. [5] Human trial evidence on Oregon grape for blood sugar: Proper evidence not found (we searched PubMed for Mahonia and Oregon grape with berberine). |
| Coptis and Phellodendron | One meta-analysis described its berberine as extracted from Coptis root and Phellodendron. [6] Traditional use and research: Coptis (Huang Lian) and berberine. |
| Tree turmeric (Berberis aristata) | Named as a berberine source. [1] The name does not make it the turmeric spice; for that herb see turmeric. |
Products vary
Labeled plant products can be inconsistent. In a 2003 US analysis of 20 goldenseal products, berberine content varied from 0.82% to 5.86% in root products, and only 10 of 17 products met proposed USP standards for hydrastine and berberine. [7] In another analysis of goldenseal powders from three suppliers, material from one supplier also contained alkaloids from other plants, indicating it was not pure goldenseal. [8] These are older US studies and may not reflect today's market, but they show why testing matters. A 2026 review also points to unstandardized quality and European national limits that differ by more than tenfold. [9]Reading label claims
- Check the plant name and part (root, rhizome, bark) and whether berberine is listed as an amount or only as a plant weight.
- Be cautious with "enhanced absorption" claims. Berberine has very poor bioavailability, under 1% in a pharmacokinetic review. [10] A meta-analysis found the greatest cholesterol effect for a berberine-silymarin combination, but that finding belongs to that combination only. [11]
- Be cautious with "nature's Ozempic" style wording, which the pharmacy review describes as a popular nickname. [9] We did not find a trial supporting such comparisons: see berberine vs metformin.
- Goldenseal and metformin: in adults with type 2 diabetes, one study found no clinically meaningful overall change in metformin levels, yet the authors suggested clinicians caution patients. [12]
- Look for independent testing: quality testing and certifications and reading supplement labels.
Back to the overview: berberine.
Frequently asked questions
Which plants contain berberine?
Barberry, Oregon grape, tree turmeric, goldenseal, Coptis and Phellodendron, among others. [1]
Is goldenseal the same as berberine?
No. Goldenseal contains berberine plus other alkaloids, and its drug-interaction effects were studied as a whole product. [4]
Can a label tell me how much berberine I get?
Not always. Analyses of goldenseal products found wide variation in alkaloid content. [7]
Does Oregon grape work like berberine for blood sugar?
Proper evidence not found in the sources we read.
Is barberry the same as turmeric?
Not according to the sources we read: tree turmeric is a berberine-containing Berberis plant. [1] For the spice, see turmeric.
