Kidney disease and some medicines: read this first
For most people, potassium-rich foods are part of an ordinary healthy diet. The kidneys remove extra potassium. But when they cannot do that well, blood potassium can climb too high. MedlinePlus lists poor kidney function and common heart and blood pressure medicines (ACE inhibitors, ARBs and potassium-sparing "water pills") among the causes of too much potassium, which can cause abnormal and dangerous heart rhythms. [1] The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) says that in people with kidney disease or on some of these medicines, even intakes below the usual adequate level can cause high potassium. [2]If you have kidney disease, a dietitian or clinician sets your potassium goal from blood tests. [3] Do not start, stop or change any medicine because of a food list; ask your clinician or pharmacist (see How interactions work). For the medical side, see Hyperkalemia and Minerals and kidney disease.
Foods with the most potassium per serving
The table copies the ODS list of selected foods. Amounts are milligrams (mg) of potassium per the serving shown, and the serving matters: half a cup of dried apricots and a medium banana are very different amounts. [2]| Food (serving) | Potassium, mg | Source and year |
|---|---|---|
| Apricots, dried, ½ cup | 755 | ODS 2022 [2] |
| Lentils, cooked, 1 cup | 731 | ODS 2022 [2] |
| Squash, acorn, mashed, 1 cup | 644 | ODS 2022 [2] |
| Prunes, dried, ½ cup | 635 | ODS 2022 [2] |
| Raisins, ½ cup | 618 | ODS 2022 [2] |
| Potato, baked, flesh only, 1 medium | 610 | ODS 2022 [2] |
| Kidney beans, canned, 1 cup | 607 | ODS 2022 [2] |
| Orange juice, 1 cup | 496 | ODS 2022 [2] |
| Banana, 1 medium | 422 | ODS 2022 [2] |
| Milk, 1%, 1 cup | 366 | ODS 2022 [2] |
| Salmon, Atlantic, farmed, cooked, 3 ounces | 326 | ODS 2022 [2] |
| Tomato, raw, 1 medium | 292 | ODS 2022 [2] |
Foods with less potassium per serving
From the same ODS list, these servings are lower. This is not a ranking of healthfulness, and a large portion adds up. [2]| Food (serving) | Potassium, mg | Source and year |
|---|---|---|
| Asparagus, cooked, ½ cup | 202 | ODS 2022 [2] |
| Apple, with skin, 1 medium | 195 | ODS 2022 [2] |
| Rice, brown, medium grain, cooked, 1 cup | 154 | ODS 2022 [2] |
| Tuna, light, canned in water, drained, 3 ounces | 153 | ODS 2022 [2] |
| Coffee, brewed, 1 cup | 116 | ODS 2022 [2] |
The ODS table is a short selection, not a complete list. A full food-by-food list with serving sizes would need a food-composition database; we did not read one for this page, so people on a restricted diet should ask a dietitian for a list that fits their goal.
Cooking and label points for people limiting potassium
NIDDK (a US National Institutes of Health institute) says people told to limit potassium may be advised to: [3]- Limit serving sizes, remembering that a large serving of a lower-potassium food can contain more than a small serving of a higher one.
- Drain canned fruits and vegetables and discard the liquid.
- Use boiling and leaching methods that can lower potassium in some vegetables.
- Use herbs and spices instead of salt substitutes, which can be high in potassium, and limit foods listing potassium chloride.
ODS adds that whole-wheat flour and brown rice are much higher in potassium than white flour and white rice. [2]
Official intake levels
These are for healthy people, not for those with kidney disease or on potassium-raising medicines. [2]| Group | Level | Source and year |
|---|---|---|
| US men 19 to 50 and 51+ (adequate intake, AI) | 3,400 mg a day | ODS 2022, from the 2019 US National Academies update [2] |
| US women 19 to 50 and 51+ (AI) | 2,600 mg a day | ODS 2022 [2] |
| US pregnancy / breastfeeding, ages 19 to 50 (AI) | 2,900 / 2,800 mg a day | ODS 2022 [2] |
| UK adults 19 to 64 | 3,500 mg a day | NHS (UK) [4] |
The NHS says most adults can get all the potassium they need from a varied diet, and that older people should not take potassium supplements unless a doctor advises it. [4] If your blood potassium is low, treatment is planned by your provider. [1] For salt substitutes see Salt substitutes and potassium chloride; for the nutrient itself see Potassium. Frequently asked questions
Which foods are highest in potassium?
In the ODS list, dried apricots (755 mg per half cup) and cooked lentils (731 mg per cup) were at the top, followed by acorn squash, prunes, raisins and baked potato. [2]
Are bananas high in potassium?
A medium banana has 422 mg in the ODS list, which is moderate compared with dried fruit, lentils or a baked potato. [2]
Who should limit high-potassium foods?
People whose kidneys cannot clear potassium well, or who take medicines that raise it, may be told to. That advice comes from a clinician or dietitian. [1][3]
Are salt substitutes high in potassium?
Many contain potassium chloride, and ODS says people with kidney disease or certain medicines should ask a provider before using them. [2]
How much potassium do healthy adults need?
The US adequate intake is 2,600 mg for women and 3,400 mg for men aged 19 and over, and the NHS gives 3,500 mg a day for UK adults. [2][4]
