Nutrition for Skin and Hair: Iron, Zinc, Protein and Testing First

What research says about iron, zinc, protein, biotin and diet for skin and hair, why testing comes before supplements, and what acne and diet studies found.

Test first, then decide

Hair and skin can reflect nutrition, but many things cause hair loss and skin problems, and extra nutrients help mainly when something is actually low. A clinician can check whether you are deficient before you take supplements. Evidence labels: established recommendation, promising but limited, mixed, insufficient evidence.

Hair

MedlinePlus lists a low-protein diet and poor nutrition among causes of hair loss, along with thyroid problems, diabetes, lupus, some medicines, chemotherapy and stress. [1] The NHS lists iron deficiency and weight loss among causes of temporary hair loss. [2]
QuestionWhat the source foundStrength of evidence
Do vitamins and minerals matter for non-scarring hair loss?A review says micronutrients play an important but not entirely clear role, deficiency may be a modifiable risk factor, and large placebo-controlled trials are needed. [3]Insufficient evidence for supplement benefit
Should everyone with hair loss be screened for iron deficiency or given iron?A review found insufficient evidence to recommend universal screening, or iron supplements for hair loss with iron deficiency but no anemia; the decision rests on clinical judgment. [4]Insufficient evidence; iron deficiency anemia itself should be treated
Does biotin help hair in healthy people?A systematic review found limited research, with possible benefit in deficiency or specific nail and hair conditions. [5]Insufficient evidence

The iron review also warns that excessive iron supplementation can cause iron overload and should be avoided, especially in high-risk patients such as those with hereditary hemochromatosis. [4] Do not take iron on a guess. See Anemia and iron deficiency.

Skin and acne

For acne, a systematic review of 34 articles found high glycemic index and glycemic load associated with acne and severity, with some randomized-trial support, and mixed findings for dairy. [6] A meta-analysis found people with acne had lower serum zinc and that zinc treatment reduced inflammatory papules without more side effects. [7] That is a finding in people with acne, not a reason for everyone to take zinc. The NHS suggests that a pharmacist can recommend tablets such as zinc, niacinamide and vitamin A for acne, which is advice to take to a pharmacist, not to self-dose. [8] For eczema, the NHS advises not to change your diet unless a doctor tells you to. [9] See Acne and Eczema.

Foods

Whole-food guides on this site include Oily fish, Walnuts and Leafy greens. I did not find a source in this review tying specific foods to skin or hair outcomes in trials; proper evidence not found for individual "skin foods" in the sources checked. A varied diet is a safe default for most people.

Safety

Supplements can interact with medicines and some, such as biotin, can change lab test results. See Collagen, biotin and beauty supplements, medication interactions and amounts and duplicate ingredients.

When to get help

See a clinician for sudden or heavy hair loss, unexplained weight change or tiredness, or a skin condition that persists. See Skin and hair safety.

Frequently asked questions

Should I take iron for hair loss?

Not without testing. A review found insufficient evidence to recommend iron supplements for hair loss with iron deficiency but no anemia, and warns about excess iron. [4]

Can diet cause acne?

A systematic review linked high glycemic load with acne severity; dairy findings were mixed. [6]

Does zinc help skin?

In acne, a meta-analysis found zinc reduced inflammatory papules. [7]
