Before anything else
This page lists no clinics, retreats or sellers and does not recommend any. It explains what to check. If you have a health condition, are pregnant, take medicines, or plan a cleansing program, talk with your doctor before you book. UK health guidance advises discussing plans carefully with your doctor, dentist or hospital specialist before committing to any procedure abroad. [1]If you become ill during or after a stay, seek medical care. Call 911 (or the local emergency number abroad) for an emergency. In the United States, Poison Help (1-800-222-1222) can advise on possible heavy metal poisoning symptoms. [2]
Why people travel
Kerala in southern India is widely associated with Ayurvedic treatment, and Sri Lanka has its own long-standing tradition; see Sri Lankan Ayurveda and Deshiya Chikitsa. People go for the setting, for hands-on treatments, or for a stay that may include food and routines (see Ayurvedic spa treatments). Travel does not change the evidence for a treatment. For what research says, see Ayurveda: evidence by specific practice.Kerala: an official classification exists
Kerala's Department of Tourism runs a classification scheme for Ayurveda centres. It says the growth of Ayurveda tourism brought many massage centres, and that most operate according to their own terms and often flout safety and health regulations. [3] Under the current scheme units are classified as Ayur Silver (minimum facilities), Ayur Gold or Ayur Diamond (highest facilities). [3] The tiers replace the older Green Leaf and Olive Leaf categories. [4] Older websites may still use the old names.Limits to know:
- Classification is valid for three years from the order date. [4]
- The scheme says the classification is not a substitute for licenses or sanctions required from other authorities. [4]
- It rates facilities and services. It is not evidence that a treatment works, and it says nothing about how well a given practitioner suits your health problems.
We did not find a comparable official scheme for Sri Lanka among the sources we could read: Proper evidence not found.
India's Ayush visa
India introduced a separate Ayush Visa category on 27 July 2023 for foreigners visiting to seek treatment under Ayush systems. [5] The government says it is for treatment at a hospital or wellness centre accredited and registered with a government authority or by NABH, NCH or NCISM. [5] Rules change, so check with the Indian authorities. See Ayurveda in modern India.Health-travel checks (apply to Ayurveda too)
UK travel-health guidance for treatment abroad is general, not Ayurveda-specific, but its points fit:- Qualifications and credentials should be independently verified and references requested before travel. [1]
- Medical advice from an administrator, a travel agent or a sales team is not acceptable. [1]
- A written contract should set out the plan and who pays for aftercare. [1]
- Obtain insurance that covers complications and evacuation home. [1] Most travel insurance policies will not cover planned treatment abroad, so you may need specialist cover. [6]
- Keep copies of all overseas medical records. [1]
- Know how to complain if things go wrong. [6]
- When things go wrong, patients may be referred to their home health service for complications that appear weeks or months later. [1]
Products, medicines and customs
Before buying Ayurvedic products abroad, remember that some preparations may contain toxic amounts of lead, mercury or arsenic. [7] The FDA says there are no FDA-approved ayurvedic products. [2] Do not start new herbs on a retreat without checking interactions with your medicines. [8] See lead, mercury and arsenic in Ayurvedic products. Import rules differ by country, so check them before you bring products home.Cleansing programs
Some retreats sell multi-day cleansing programs. See panchakarma and cleansing, who should avoid bodywork and cleansing and detox claims checked. Decide with your doctor first. After you return
Tell your doctor what you had and took. [9] See telling your doctor about Ayurveda and warning signs after Ayurvedic treatment. Check red flags and the practitioner checklist.Frequently asked questions
