What the reviews found
| Question | What the source found | Strength of evidence |
|---|---|---|
| School adjustment, attention, grades (preschool to university) | A review of 46 randomized trials found small effects on school adjustment, academic performance and impulsivity, small to moderate on attention, and no difference for behavior or interpersonal skills. [1] | Promising but limited |
| University students' anxiety and depression (during COVID-19) | A review found moderate improvement in anxiety (g = 0.61) and depression (g = 0.37), and a small, non-significant effect on stress. Results varied a great deal between studies (I2 of 72 to 77 percent for anxiety, depression and stress). [2] | Mixed |
| Online programs for university students | A review of 9 randomized trials found improvement in depression, anxiety and stress, but not well-being. The authors asked for better trials. [3] | Promising but limited |
| Grades (GPA) | A review of 6 randomized trials found an overall effect of d = 0.42 on GPA. Its authors called the field emerging and the mechanism unclear. [4] | Insufficient evidence |
| Younger teens at school | The MYRIAD trial of 8,376 students aged 11 to 14 found no benefit of a 10-lesson program over normal teaching at one year. [5] | No good evidence of benefit |
Reading the results
Two reviews of academic performance disagree. The GPA review found a positive effect in 6 trials. [4] A separate review of health professions students found only 2 eligible trials, with high or unclear risk of bias, and no statistical difference in exam marks. [6] That is why we label grade benefits insufficient evidence. Most trials cannot keep students unaware of the group they are in, and many rely on self-report. The school adjustment review found significant effects only when programs were delivered by outside facilitators with previous mindfulness experience, which suggests quality of teaching matters. [1]
Medical and health-care students
Cochrane reviews are cautious for this group. For medical students and junior doctors (10 studies, 731 people), mindfulness did not substantially change anxiety or depression after the program. Stress and academic performance showed small differences judged unlikely to be clinically important, and certainty ranged from low to very low. [7] A review of 6 trials in medical students found lower perceived stress at the end of the program and at 6 months. [8] Because those results conflict, treat benefit here as mixed.Related pages

Does meditation help students focus?
Reviews suggest a small to moderate effect on attention in school programs, but results vary and the largest teen trial found no mental health benefit. [1][5]
Does meditation improve grades?
Proper evidence not found that is consistent. One review found a GPA effect from 6 trials, while another found only 2 trials in health students with no clear difference. [4][6]
Are online programs useful for university students?
A review of 9 trials found improvements in depression, anxiety and stress with online programs, but it asked for stronger trials. [3]
Can meditation reduce test anxiety?
Proper evidence not found for test anxiety specifically in the reviews we read. We searched PubMed for mindfulness and test anxiety in students.
Is it safe for a student with anxiety?
Many people do fine, but some students at risk of mental health problems did slightly worse in the MYRIAD trial, so check with a clinician or counselor first. [10]

Safety and who should take extra care
In MYRIAD, students already at risk of mental health problems scored slightly worse on depression risk and well-being after the program, though differences were small and not clinically relevant. [10] A scoping review of school group programs also reported negative outcomes in some programs and in some groups. [11] If a student has anxiety, trauma or low mood, they should talk with a school counselor or clinician before joining. See meditation difficulties and distressing experiences.
