Reviews suggest yoga may ease anxiety symptoms in people with elevated anxiety. For people diagnosed with an anxiety disorder the evidence is thin and mixed, and the best trial found cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) did better. Evidence label: promising but limited for elevated anxiety; insufficient evidence for anxiety disorders as a group.Yoga comes from Indian traditions. The studies below test modern programs. NCCIH notes that yoga as practiced in the United States typically emphasizes physical postures, breathing techniques and meditation. [2]
What the evidence shows
| Question | What the source found | Strength |
|---|---|---|
| People with elevated anxiety | A 2018 review of 8 trials (319 people) found small short-term effects versus no treatment (SMD -0.43) and larger effects versus active comparators (SMD -0.86, but a wide range of -1.56 to -0.15). Selection bias risk was unclear for most trials [3] | Promising but limited |
| People diagnosed with anxiety disorders | The same review found no effects in patients diagnosed by formal (DSM) criteria, only in those diagnosed by other methods or without a diagnosis; it called the evidence inconclusive [3] | Insufficient evidence |
| Wider review including depression trials | A 2023 review of 23 studies (1,420 people) found yoga better than controls for anxiety in anxiety disorders, but rated certainty very low for every outcome because of bias, inconsistency and imprecision [4] | Insufficient evidence |
| Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), head to head | See the trial below | Promising, but behind CBT |
NCCIH summarizes the picture the same way: yoga may help anxiety symptoms in a variety of populations, but there is little evidence of a benefit for people with anxiety disorders. [2]
The yoga versus CBT trial
A 2021 randomized trial in the US enrolled 226 adults with GAD. Groups of four to six people were assigned to Kundalini yoga, CBT or stress education, each for twelve 120-minute sessions plus about 20 minutes of daily homework. Raters who did not know the group assignments judged response after 12 weeks. [5]- Response rates were 54.2% for Kundalini yoga, 70.8% for CBT and 33.0% for stress education. [5]
- Yoga beat stress education, but it was not shown to be as effective as CBT. The authors concluded that CBT should remain first-line treatment. [5]
- Only 68.6% finished the assessment, and one yoga tradition was tested, so results do not cover every style. [5]

What this evidence cannot tell you
- Anxiety scores are self-reported in most trials, and people cannot be blinded to yoga. Waitlist comparisons cannot separate yoga from attention and routine.
- Proper evidence not found: for the best pose, sequence or class length for anxiety. A PubMed title search for yoga with pose, poses or asana and anxiety, stress, sleep or insomnia returned no records on 2026-10-22.
- NCCIH describes a 2019 review of 38 studies with a substantial benefit that was largest in studies done in India, with a mix of participants and settings. [2] Differences between settings are a reason to be cautious about applying any single number.
Where it fits next to treatment
The NHS lists CBT-based talking therapies as the main treatment for generalized anxiety disorder, alongside medicines such as an SSRI, and lists yoga or pilates among self-help activities for relaxing. [6] Do not change or stop an anxiety medicine because you started yoga. Ask your prescriber first; the NHS notes that antidepressants are reduced gradually to avoid withdrawal symptoms. [7]Frequently asked questions
Is yoga good for anxiety?
It may help symptoms in people with elevated anxiety, according to a 2018 review, but the trials were small and the evidence for diagnosed anxiety disorders was inconclusive. [3]
Can yoga replace CBT or medicine for an anxiety disorder?
The evidence does not support that. In the GAD trial, CBT had the higher response rate and the authors kept CBT as first-line treatment. [5]
Which yoga poses are best for anxiety?
Proper evidence not found. We searched PubMed titles for yoga poses with anxiety terms and found no trials comparing individual poses.
Is yoga safe if I have panic attacks?
NCCIH calls yoga generally safe for healthy people when done properly under a qualified instructor, and advises newcomers to avoid forceful breathing. [2] Talk with your clinician first if you have panic attacks or a health condition.
How long until yoga helps anxiety?
Proper evidence not found for a reliable timeline. The GAD trial measured response after 12 weeks of group sessions with daily homework. [5]
