Reviews of randomized trials generally find lower depression scores after yoga than with no treatment or usual care, with smaller or no clear differences against active comparisons such as exercise or relaxation. The quality of the trials is a recurring limit. Evidence label: promising but limited, as an add-on. Yoga is not a treatment to use in place of therapy or medicine.Yoga comes from Indian traditions; the trials test modern programs, and NCCIH notes that yoga as practiced in the United States typically emphasizes postures, breathing techniques and meditation. What the reviews found
| Review | What it found | Strength |
|---|---|---|
| 2013, 12 trials, 619 people | Moderate evidence for short-term benefit versus usual care (SMD -0.69), limited evidence versus relaxation and versus aerobic exercise. Three trials had low risk of bias. No trial reported safety data [4] | Promising but limited |
| 2024, 24 studies, 1,395 people with depressive disorders | Lower depression severity short term versus passive control (SMD -0.43) but not versus active control (SMD -0.22, not significant). Higher remission rates versus both passive (OR 3.20) and active (OR 2.04) comparisons. Quality of evidence ranged from moderate to very low [5] | Promising but limited |
| 2023, 34 trials in major depressive disorder | Moderate improvements on two depression scales; no adverse events were reported in the yoga groups [6] | Promising but limited |
| 2023, yoga, tai chi and qigong trials in depressive disorders | Yoga lowered depression symptoms only after sensitivity analyses; certainty of evidence was very low for all outcomes [7] | Insufficient evidence |
NCCIH summarizes it this way: yoga can be a helpful addition to treatment for depression. It cites a 2020 review of 7 studies (260 people with major depressive disorder) that found yoga may have small additional benefits when used along with other treatment. [3]
Reading the results fairly
- Passive versus active comparisons. Against a waitlist or usual care, any regular, social activity might help. The 2024 review's non-significant result against active controls is a reminder of that. [5]
- Self-reported scores. Most outcomes are questionnaires. Participants cannot be blinded to yoga.
- Mixed samples. Trials blend people with diagnosed depression and people with raised symptoms, and many are small.
- Authors' own words. The 2024 review called yoga a possible treatment option, particularly for major depression, while stating that evidence quality is inconsistent. [5]
- Proper evidence not found: for a best pose, class length or weekly amount. We searched PubMed titles for yoga with pose, poses or asana and depression terms on 2026-10-22 and found no records.
Where yoga fits in care
The NHS says depression treatment usually combines self-help, talking therapies and medicines. It says exercise has evidence for helping depression and is one of the main treatments for mild depression. [2] It also says most people with moderate or severe depression benefit from antidepressants, and that an antidepressant plus CBT usually works better than either alone. [2]So a sensible reading is that yoga can be a gentle way to be active and calm alongside treatment. If you take medicine, do not stop it on your own. The NHS advises reducing antidepressant doses gradually to avoid withdrawal symptoms, with a prescriber's guidance. [2] Do not use yoga to postpone seeing a health care provider about a medical problem. [3]
Frequently asked questions
Does yoga help depression?
Reviews report benefits versus no treatment or usual care, with weaker results against active comparisons, and the trial quality is mixed. [5]
Can yoga replace antidepressants or therapy?
No evidence supports that. Reviews examined yoga mostly as an add-on, and the NHS says most people with moderate or severe depression benefit from antidepressants. [2]
Is yoga as good as exercise for depression?
The 2013 review found limited evidence of lower depression scores after yoga than after aerobic exercise. [4] The 2024 review found no significant difference from active controls on severity, though remission rates were higher with yoga. [5]
Is yoga safe if I have depression?
The 2023 review reported no adverse events in yoga groups, and the 2024 review found no safety differences from controls, but the 2013 review found no trial that reported safety data. [6][5][4] If you feel worse, tell your clinician.
Which style of yoga is best for depression?
Proper evidence not found. The reviews we read pooled many styles and did not identify a best one.
