Back to Meditation & MindfulnessPurpose and who it suits
People often ask whether morning, evening or another time is best. This page reports what health sources suggest and what the few studies on timing found. It suits healthy adults building a gentle practice. If meditation makes you anxious or low, or you have a mental health condition, see who should check with a clinician before meditating. What health sources suggest
- The NHS beginner guide says that, if possible, meditating at the start of the day can set you up for what is ahead, and in the evening can help you let go of tension before bed. It adds that everyone needs to find a routine that works for them. [1]
- Harvard Health lists three options: morning to set the tone, midday as a short reset after a stressful moment, and evening to wind down before sleep. It advises choosing a time you can realistically keep. [2]
- The NHS mindfulness page suggests picking a regular time, such as a morning journey to work or a lunchtime walk. [3]
These are practical suggestions. None says one time is proven better for health.
What studies found
Does morning use last longer?
Insufficient evidence (observational app data; shows who kept using an app, not health benefit)In data from a commercial meditation app (14,879 users), a larger share of morning sessions was associated with better short-term engagement, and the drop in morning use over 180 days was smaller than at other times. [4]
Does doing it at the same time every day matter?
MixedIn app data from 4,205 users, consistent timing was linked with keeping up the practice for fewer than half of users; for others, flexibility was linked with longer use. [5][4]
Does morning practice change the workday?
Insufficient evidence (small, not randomized, self-reported)In a five-day diary study of 44 healthcare workers, morning meditation was linked with higher positive affect and better end-of-day health ratings, especially after poor sleep. [6]
Does it help to do it at bedtime?
Insufficient evidenceProper evidence not found in this search; see meditation for sleep and insomnia and relaxation for sleep.
Proper evidence not found from randomized trials that compare morning with evening meditation on health outcomes. I searched NCCIH, NHS, Harvard Health, PubMed and Europe PMC for time-of-day studies. The app studies describe people who chose their own times, so the type of person who meditates in the morning may differ from those who do not.
Morning, midday or evening in practice
- Morning may fit if mornings are predictable, since fixed routines can anchor a new habit; habit research found morning practices generally had greater habit strength, but this was across many behaviors, not meditation alone. [7]
- Midday can be a short pause at work. A small crossover study found 15 minutes of guided meditation in a seated office setting lowered perceived stress and heart rate compared with usual work in 20 adults. [8]
- Evening suits winding down. If you get sleepy, try sitting up rather than lying down; see posture and seating.
If you cannot do it at the same time each day, that is fine. The NHS says not to worry if a preferred time is not possible. [1]
Stop signs
Stop and take a break if meditating at any time of day makes you panicky, detached or distressed. A review of 83 studies found about 8% of participants reported an adverse event, most often anxiety or depression. What is the best time of day to meditate?
There is no proven best time. The NHS suggests start or end of day but says to find a routine that works for you. [1]
Is morning meditation better?
Morning use was linked with keeping up an app habit in one observational study, which does not show better health effects. [4]
Should I meditate before bed?
Evening practice is suggested by the NHS to let go of tension before bed. [1] Proper evidence not found for bedtime meditation as a treatment for insomnia in this search.
Do I have to meditate at the same time each day?
Not necessarily. Consistent timing helped some app users keep going, but not most. [5]
Can I meditate at work?
Yes, short seated practices have been studied in offices, with small effects on perceived stress. [8]
