Back to Traditional Healing SystemsWhat "energy healing" means
"Energy healing" is an umbrella phrase for hands-on or hands-near practices based on the idea that a person has an energy field that a practitioner can influence. Researchers often call them biofield therapies. Named practices include Reiki, Therapeutic Touch, Healing Touch, external qigong and several forms of spiritual or laying-on-of-hands healing. Each has its own history and its own meaning for those who practice it, and we respect that. This page does something narrow: it checks the health claims against the research. For individual guides, see Reiki and Therapeutic Touch and biofield therapies.Traditional explanation, proposed mechanism, measured outcome
These are three different things.- Traditional or practice explanation: an energy that supports the body's own healing. NCCIH describes Reiki as practitioners placing their hands lightly on or just above a person, with the goal of directing energy to help facilitate the person's healing response. [1]
- Proposed mechanism: NCCIH states there is no scientific evidence supporting the existence of the energy field thought to play a role in Reiki. [1] Such frameworks (like qi in Traditional Chinese Medicine) are treated here as traditional ideas, not established physiology.
- Clinical outcome: whether people in a trial feel or function better than comparison groups. That is the only part trials can test, and it is the part below.
Claim check
"Reiki treats anxiety and depression"
Insufficient evidenceA Cochrane review of 3 small trials found insufficient evidence either way, with unclear or high bias risk [2]
"Reiki works for any condition"
Insufficient evidenceA 2008 review of 9 trials called the evidence insufficient for any condition and the value unproven [3]
"Reiki beats placebo for mental health"
Mixed; promising but limitedA 2022 review of 14 placebo-controlled trials rated evidence high for clinically relevant stress and depression, but the authors say findings are inconclusive, with few studies and some bias concerns [4]
"Energy healing relieves cancer treatment symptoms"
Mixed; no clear benefit in higher-quality studiesA 2023 review of 21 studies (1,375 patients) found short-term improvements in quality of life, pain and nausea but no long-term differences; higher-quality studies found no difference from active or passive comparison groups [5]
"Biofield healing is proven"
Insufficient evidenceA review of 28 non-contact trials found small pilot-sized trials, so no robust conclusion [6]
"Distant or prayer healing works"
MixedA 2000 review of 23 trials found 13 positive, 9 no effect and 1 negative; limitations prevented firm conclusions [7]
"The energy field is real and measurable"
No good evidenceNCCIH: no scientific evidence supports the energy field [1]
How big is the research?
A 2025 scoping review mapped 353 human studies of biofield therapies, including 255 randomized trials. Nearly half (172) reported positive results on all outcomes, 95 mixed, 71 nonsignificant and 3 negative. The authors say inconsistent reporting and research challenges leave findings inconclusive for specific conditions. [8] A count of positive studies is not the same as a pooled, bias-checked result.A review of 28 trials using only non-contact biofield treatment found wide differences in design, and its authors said small pilot-sized trials prevent robust conclusions. [6]
Why results are hard to interpret
Most trials are small. People feel the experience of calm attention, quiet time and a caring practitioner, and these can affect how people rate symptoms. The Cochrane review of placebo interventions found no important clinical effects in general, but possible effects on patient-reported outcomes such as pain and nausea, which are hard to separate from biased reporting. [9] That does not mean the experience is unreal. It means a rating improvement does not by itself show the proposed energy mechanism.Reading marketing language
Be cautious with promises to "clear blockages," "balance your field" or "heal" a named disease, and with claims that a special lineage guarantees results. Our guide to sacred and authentic marketing claims and how to evaluate a therapy claim can help.Frequently asked questions
Is energy healing scientifically proven?
No. NCCIH says Reiki has not been clearly shown to be effective for any health-related purpose, and that most of the research was not high quality and results were inconsistent. [1]
Does Reiki work better than placebo?
One 2022 systematic review of 14 placebo-controlled trials reported benefits over placebo for some mental health symptoms, but called findings inconclusive because studies were few and mostly had some risk of bias. [4] Earlier reviews found insufficient evidence. [2]
Is energy healing dangerous?
NCCIH reports Reiki has not been shown to have harmful effects. [1] The main concern is relying on it instead of needed medical care.
Can I use it alongside medical treatment?
Many people do for comfort. Tell your clinician, and keep your treatment plan. Never skip appointments or stop medicine because of it.
Why do some people feel better afterward?
Calm, attention and expectation can change how symptoms feel. The research cannot show whether an energy field is involved. [9]
